冬至节，大部分地区习惯吃饺子，山区传统是吃糕，晋南地区兴盛熬油菜根米汤喝。也有的地方是吃馄饨，有“冬至馄饨夏至面”的说法。

吃馄饨我国许多地方有冬至吃馄饨的风俗。据《燕京岁时记》载：“冬至馄饨夏至面。”，冬至这天，京师人家多食馄饨。南宋时，当时临安（今杭州）也有每逢冬至这一天吃馄饨的风俗。宋朝人周密说，临安人在冬至吃馄饨是为了祭祀祖先。只是到了南宋，我国才开始盛行冬至食馄饨祭祖的风俗。

每年农历冬至这天，不论贫富，饺子是必不可少的节日饭。谚云：“十月一，冬至到，家户户吃水饺。”这种习俗，是因纪念“医圣”张仲景冬至舍药留下的。
张仲景是南阳稂东人，他著《伤寒杂病论》，集医家之大成，被历代医者奉为经典。张仲景有名言：“进则救世，退则救民；不能为良相，亦当为良医。”东汉时他曾任长沙太守，访病施药，大堂行医。后毅然辞官回乡，为乡邻治病．其返乡之时，正是冬季。他看到白河两岸乡亲面黄肌瘦，饥寒交迫，不少人的耳朵都冻烂了。便让其弟子在南阳东关搭起医棚，支起大锅，在冬至那天舍“祛寒娇耳汤”医治冻疮。他把羊肉、辣椒和一些驱寒药材放在锅里熬煮，然后将羊肉、药物捞出来切碎，用面包成耳朵样的“娇耳”，煮熟后，分给来求药的人每人两只“娇耳”，一大碗肉汤。人们吃了“娇耳”，喝了“祛寒汤”，浑身暖和，两耳发热，冻伤的耳朵都治好了。后人学着“娇耳”的样子，包成食物，也叫“饺子”或“扁食”。
冬至吃饺子，是不忘“医圣”张仲景“祛寒娇耳汤”之恩。至今南阳仍有“冬至不端饺子碗，冻掉耳朵没人管”的民谣。
过去老北京有“冬至馄饨夏至面”的说法。相传汉朝时，北方匈奴经常骚扰边疆，百姓不得安宁。当时匈奴部落中有浑氏和屯氏两个首领，十分凶残。百姓对其恨之入骨，于是用肉馅包成角儿，取“浑”与“屯”之音，呼作“馄饨”。恨以食之，并求平息战乱，能过上太平日子。因最初制成馄饨是在冬至这一天，在冬至这天家家户户吃馄饨。

在江南水乡，则有冬至之夜吃赤豆粥的习俗。这也缘于古代传说，南方的部族首领共工的儿子不成才，作恶多端，死于冬至这一天，死后变成疫鬼，继续残害百姓。因这个疫鬼最怕赤豆，所以人们就在冬至这一天煮吃赤豆粥，用以驱避疫鬼，防灾祛病。后来这种赤豆粥也称为“冬至粥”，其中除了赤豆以外，也加入红枣、核桃肉等，补益身体。

冬至这一天是一年中最长的一夜，许多人家利用这一夜，用糯米粉做"冬至圆"，作冬至圆时，经常应孩子们的要求捏一些小动物，小猫、小狗、小兔子、小老虎等等。孩子们每到此时都很高兴。吃冬至圆以前，在门窗桌柜床灯的后面，都要分别粘一个冬至圆，称为"耗晌"，要等到"送灶"以后才能烤食。如果这时家里有孕妇的话，冬至圆发了，就会生男，否则就会生女。吃冬至圆时入口必须成双成对，以求吉利。吃到最后只剩两粒，已婚的人将会万事如意，剩下一颗，单身未婚者将会凡事顺利。还有些家庭在傍晚，用应时的果品、三牲拜神祭祖。也有在这一天"晒冬米"的，就是把白米用水洗过，在这天的阳光下曝晒后收藏起来，留给日后有病的人煮粥吃。

早上9點是上英文課，全班最用功的阿力坐在老師面前第一個位置。

老師教：「SUSPECT，嫌犯」。阿力立刻在筆記寫上「鹹飯」

老師不小心瞄到阿力的筆記，但又不忍讓她難堪，

就提高音量：「SUSPECT，嫌疑犯！」

只見阿力遲疑一秒，似有頓悟提筆將「鹹飯」改成「鹹魚飯」

老師再喵完後差點暈倒

於是提高音量說, 是「犯人的嫌疑犯！」 ,

阿力聽了覺得很有道理, 於是再加上三個字「飯冷的鹹魚飯」

因為阿力聽媽媽說用隔夜冷飯炒出來的比較好吃

老師再也忍不住了,用惡狠狠的眼神盯著阿力,

我說是「有一位嫌疑犯！」

阿力用顫抖的筆跡慢慢寫下「魷魚味鹹魚飯」

老師只好走到阿力身邊, 然後手按阿力的肩膀說,

I've just reviewed a good article about why we should not give salt or anything salty to babies who are weaning and starting solids.

You should not add salt to your baby's food in the first year as this may damage her kidneys. At this age, your baby's kidneys are not mature enough to handle the salt loading. Besides, salt exists naturally in the foods you feed your baby.

In the first six months of life your baby needs less than 1g of salt per day, which she will usually obtain from breastmilk or formula milk. Between seven and 12 months this increases slightly to around 1g. Toddlers aged one to three years need less than 2g (this is the equivalent of 0.8g sodium per day).

To stay within these recommendations you should aim to:
• limit salty foods in your baby's diet
• don't add salt during cooking
• avoid processed foods, such as ready meals, pies, biscuits, crackers, soups, gravies, sauces, pizza, tinned vegetables, cheese, bacon and crisps, which are all very high in salt, and offer low-salt alternatives.

Foods made specifically for babies, such as jar foods and infant cereals, have a low salt content, as salt is not added during processing. These should not be confused with foods aimed at older children. These can be highly processed and have a high salt content and are therefore not suitable for your baby.

If you do choose to offer your baby or toddler high-salt foods, it is recommended that you only offer small amounts occasionally.

Salt is usually labelled as sodium on food labels: 1g of sodium is equivalent to 2.55g of salt. Read food labels carefully and aim to choose those foods with a sodium content of no more than 0.1g of sodium per 100g.

Suitable low-salt foods for your baby include fruit, vegetables and salad, plain meat, poultry and fish, eggs, pulses and milk. Whether they are fresh, tinned or frozen shouldn't make a difference as long as they have no added salt (tinned vegetables often have salt added so be especially careful to check these). Rice and dried pastas are also low in salt provided they have had no salt added during cooking. Make a habit of reading food labels, and you will soon get to know which are the most suitable foods to buy.

白果腐竹煲香粥

Ingredients:

6粒（约12g）生白果仁
20g 干腐竹
20g 芥兰
20g 潮州咸菜
50g 香米
1/2茶匙（3ml）芝麻香油
10g 香葱
300ml 骨汤

Directions :

干腐竹用温水泡开，切成2cm的斜段；潮州咸菜用流动水冲洗干净，切成丝；香葱洗净，切成小粒；芥兰洗净切碎；香米淘洗一次，放入砂锅中，备用。
将骨汤倒入砂锅中与香米拌匀，移至灶台上用大火煮开，再转小火煲煮至香米六成熟。
放入生白果仁、腐竹段、芥兰碎和潮州咸菜继续煲煮至所有原料成熟，调入芝麻香油搅拌均匀，离火。
最后，将切好的香葱撒在上面即可。

What is a Junk Food?

Any food that has poor nutritional value is considered unhealthy and may be called a junk food. A food that is high in fat, sodium, and/or sugar is known as a junk food. Junk food is easy to carry, purchase and consume. Generally, a junk food is given a very attractive appearance by adding food additives and colors to enhance flavor, texture, appearance, and increasing long self life.

A junk food has little enzyme producing vitamins & minerals and contains high level of calories. When we eat these empty calorie foods, the body is required to produce its own enzymes to convert these empty calories into usable energy. This is not desired as these enzyme producing functions in our body should be reserved for the performance of vital metabolic reactions.

Since junk food is high in fats and sugars, it is responsible for obesity, dental cavities, Type 2 diabetes and heart diseases.

A fast food may also be a junk food. Look into the calories present in fast food of different make.

Some junk food pictures of beef burger, french fries, coco cola, and potato chips and cinema popcorns.

Cinema popcorn: Popcorns are healthy but the one sold in cinemas are nutritional horror. The Center for Science in the Public Interest compared in Nov 2009 some popcorn and drinks combos sold at key movie theater chains in USA and found the following:

A medium popcorn and soda combo at Regal, the United States' biggest movie theater chain, contains1610 calories and 60 grams of saturated fat.

At AMC theaters, a large popcorn contains 1030 calories and 57 grams of saturated fat.

Ingredients :

3 to 4 tablespoons of rice
2 to 3 pieces of sweet potato (cut into small chunks)
Water

Directions :

Rinse rice once to remove dust and dirt. Place rice in a pot and fill it with water (water should be at least 3 cm above the layer of rice). Add sweet potatoes and bring water to boil.
Upon boiling, reduce heat to medium low and continue cooking till rice turns to porridge and sweet potatoes are semi-soft and cooked. Have a pot of hot water ready in case you need to top up some water when the porridge dries out during cooking.

Hari Wesak merupakan hari terpenting bagi penganut agama Buddha kerana hari Wesak melambangkan Kelahiran, Pencerahan Agung, dan Kewafatan Gautama Buddha. On April 22, 1970, Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator, founded the first Earth Day in an attempt to bring about a better understanding of the affect we have on our planet, and calling us to take action to make positive environmental changes in our community. The first Earth Day was attended by 20 million Americans nationwide, from college campuses to town halls, and giant teach-ins were organized in New York City and Philadelphia, the latter event turning into a seven-day event known as Earth Week.

Next focus on an object at arm's length. Do this extremely relaxing exercise four or five times a day.

If your eye twitches, or your eyes are red and feeling itchy, massage your scalp with curd.

Soak 1 tsp. dry amla in one cup of water overnight. Next morning strain it through a muslin cloth and then add one extra cup of water. Splash your eyes with this solution each morning. This makes your eyes sparkle.

For Puffy Eyes: Grate a potato with its peel and apply on your closed eyelids for about 20 minutes and relax completely. You may even take a nap.
Wash your face before sleeping, and ensure that there is no make-up on your face before you sleep, because, make-up creams may spoil your face as it will be there for the whole night. It is better if no cream is applied. What I feel is, wash your face before sleeping and if at all you want to apply any cream, just apply night cream and none other than that.

The lunisolar Chinese calendar determines Chinese New Year dates.

The calendar is also used in countries that have adopted or have been influenced by Han culture (notably the Koreans, Japanese and Vietnamese) and may have a common ancestry with the similar New Years festivals outside East Asia (such as Iran, and historically, the Bulgars lands).

In the Gregorian calendar, Chinese New Year falls on different dates each year, a date between January 21 and February 20. In theChinese calendar, winter solstice must occur in the 11th month, which means that Chinese New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice (rarely the third if an intercalary month intervenes). In traditional Chinese Culture, lichun is a solar term marking the start of spring, which occurs about February 4. The dates for Chinese New Year from 1996 to 2019 (in the Gregorian calendar) are at the left, along with the year's presiding animal zodiac and its earthly branch. The names of the earthly branches have no English counterparts and are not the Chinese translations of the animals. Alongside the 12-year cycle of the animal zodiac there is a 10-year cycle of heavenly stems. Each of the ten heavenly stems is associated with one of the five elements of Chinese astrology, namely: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The elements are rotated every two years while a yin and yang association alternates every year. The elements are thus distinguished: Yang Wood, Yin Wood, Yang Fire, Yin Fire, etc. These produce a combined cycle that repeats every 60 years. For example, the year of the Yang Fire Rat occurred in 1936 and in 1996, 60 years apart.

Many confuse their Chinese birth-year with their Gregorian birth-year. As the Chinese New Year starts in late January to mid-February, the Chinese year dates from January 1 until that day in the new Gregorian year remain unchanged from the previous Gregorian year. For example, the 1989 year of the snake began on February 6, 1989. The year 1990 is considered by some people to be the year of the horse. However, the 1989 year of the snake officially ended on January 26, 1990. This means that anyone born from January 1 to January 25, 1990 was actually born in the year of the snake rather than the year of the horse. Many online Chinese Sign calculators do not account for the non-alignment of the two calendars, using Gregorian-calendar years rather than official Chinese New Year dates.

One scheme of continuously numbered Chinese-calendar years assigns 4708 to the year beginning February 3, 2011, but this is not universally accepted; the calendar is traditionally cyclical, not continuously numbered.

Chinese New Year – often called Chinese Lunar New Year although it actually is lunisolar – is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is an all East and South-East-Asia celebration and the correct naming is hence "Asian New Year". In China it is known as "Spring Festival," the literal translation of the Chinese name 春节 (Pinyin: Chūn Jié), owing to the difference between Western and traditional Chinese methods for computing the seasons. It marks the end of the winter season, analogous to the Western carnival. The festival begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月;pinyin: Zhēng Yuè) in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year's Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, is known as Chú Xī (除夕) or "Eve of the Passing Year."

Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunisolar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year is a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, such as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Tibet,Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and also in Chinatowns elsewhere. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), and Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (Tết), and the Japanese before 1873 (Oshogatsu).

In countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States, although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Australia Post, Canada Post, and the US Postal Service issue New Year's themed stamps.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity". On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper is a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition is to reconcile, forget all grudges and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.

Although the Chinese calendar traditionally does not use continuously numbered years, outside China its years are often numbered from the reign of theYellow Emperor. But at least three different years numbered 1 are now used by various scholars, making the year 2011 "Chinese Year" 4709, 4708, or 4648.
